Photographic Documentary Class in Melbourne

Enrolments invited now

Congratulations to the students who completed the first documentary photography class.  Details regarding the next class will be posted shortly.

I am also very happy to announce that Vanbar Imaging are now a sponsor for this class.  At the end of each course students will vote on each other's work.  The overall winner will receive a Vanbar Imaging gift voucher.  The recently finished class are currently voting.  The winner will be announced very shortly.

Following are links to the work that was produced for the class.  The students were given a number of projects to complete, the first project on the first night of the class was to walk the length of Swanston Street with a particular theme.  There were three themes, the colour red, sculptures and doorways.  Each group of two were given one of these themes to photograph.

The students in the class were Ellie, Tom, Linda, Ian, Rebecca and Tessa

Click on each link under their name to see the work they produced.  All work was uploaded to each student's individual blog site.  Some blogs have links to all the projects completed for the class and others are separate.

THE NEXT CLASS WILL BE HELD IN JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2011 -

Please email me with expressions of interest.

Enrolments are strictly limited to 6 people per class.  Pleas contact me directly with an expression of interest in attending the class and your preferred evening i.e. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday.

The class involves 2 night sessions and one day excursion held on a weekend.  The date and time of the day excursion will depend on where the excursion will take place.

The cost for the course is $165 per person.

Course Description
This course explores the art of the photo-essay, students must have prior experience either through practical use or through a beginner's photography class.  If a student is unknown to me I will request to view a selection of your work, this three session class offers a chance to get creative with intensive photo-essay sessions.  Each class will give practical lessons in exploring a theme through the use of still photographs.  The course will include one practical evening photo essay session and a one daytime excursion, followed by an evening of presentation and assessment.  Between each class students will be given assignments to complete in their own time and will be expected to edit and upload their images between each class date to receive one on one feedback.

Course Content
This class starts with an over view of photo-essay and documentary photography approaches.  The first class will include a practical workshop where we will leave the classroom to start shooting (this will occur at night, please bring your tripod).  The second class will occur during the day with an excursion.  The class will expect students to use their skills to create a night time photo essay and a day time photo essay.  The third class will focus on editing techniques and other creative aspects in producing a photo essay.  Students will be shown ways to display their work online and basic retouching effects that may enhance their images. Between each class students will upload their images to a public web site, where their work will be assessed and given feedback.  Homework will also be given based on a particular theme and this will contribute to your collection of photo-essays at the end of the class.

Course Outline (2 x 3 hour evening classes and 1 x 3 hour weekend day class)
1. Introduction to photo-essays and documentary photography - what is it?  What different styles fit into this genre?  First workshop to include a small documentary study outside to also ascertain the level of competence of the students with their digital slr cameras.  Two homework exercises will be set to be completed by week 3.
2. A day time excursion where your skills will be put to the test.
3. Presentation and assessment of student's work.  Tips to edit your work and enhance your images.  Suggestions on how to show your work, either online or through competitions.

Course Outcomes
Learn how to approach a subject through a series of photographs rather than just one.  As in all story telling techniques you don't want to give your audience all the detail in the first image but you do want to lure them in.   Learn how to edit your work and enhance your images for publication.

Pre-requisites: Digital SLR, tripod, basic photo editing skills, ability to upload to the internet.
